Enterprise AI doesn’t work because data sits in silos across a dozen different systems. But why the hell are smaller SMEs behaving like this too?
The key reason AI projects fail is data silos. Any structure that encourages data silos is not a good fit for AI. At Superbench, we help B2C companies increase revenue. We see one org chart fail every single time: The Island Structure. Maybe our tool isn’t built for it, but honestly, this structure is a death by a thousand cuts for any AI project. If you have a broken structure and try to layer AI on top of it, you’re just automating a mess.
The “Island” Problem
An Island sales structure is where one person does everything, from prospecting all the way to the close.
Don’t get me wrong, if you have 1 salesperson, an Island structure works fine. But what happens when you have more than 7 sales staff? More than 50 new leads a day? Big-ticket sales?
Don’t you want to make sure each person can reply faster and actually deliver the brand promise? Right now, you can’t, because:
- Everyone nurtures leads in their own way.
- Data sits everywhere: in personal phones, heads, or private chats.
- As a company owner, you track jack shit.
This is why layering a traditional CRM on top of an Island structure doesn’t work. You ask your sales team to label the deals and log the call, but they just don’t do it! Why would they? In an Island structure, their power comes from being the only one with the info. You blame the tool, but it’s a structure problem.
Being Held Hostage
If your data is trapped in WhatsApp groups and screenshots, you are completely screwed if a salesperson leaves. Worse, they can hold you hostage while they’re still there.
I get messages from marketing saying sales doesn’t want to use our tool for “reasons.” Marketing can’t get lead attribution because the sales team refuses to log data. I see this happening constantly in:
-
- Soft furnishing companies (Curtains, blinds, etc.)
- Renovation companies
- Car dealerships
- Insurance agencies
Ok, I get it for insurance, agents earn commission forever, so an assembly line is hard. Fine. But why the heck do you turn your soft furnishing company into an Island structure? There is zero reason for it.
The Fix: Assembly Lines
Before you use AI, you need an org structure that improves data transparency. Move it to an assembly line or a pod structure.
Stop trying to “layer” AI on top of silos. Instead, let AI handle the repetitive parts and the data labeling from the start. Let your humans come in to be the “Closer” and earn their commission there. Don’t say AI isn’t helpful when you’ve built a structure that allows your employees to start a coup against you.
A Message to Young Founders
Young people: this is your chance to get into these “old school” industries. Build the right org chart from Day 1. Use an AI-first approach. The “Old Guards” can’t move as fast as you. They have to have long, painful talks with their people just to get them to change a habit. You can start with just you and Claude and build a system that captures data automatically while they are still arguing with their staff.
The Bottom Line
Maybe an Island structure works for your business right now, but will it work when you scale?
AI won’t solve your structural or people problems. If your data is a mess because your sales team refuses to label a lead, think again: Are you actually the right manager for this business?
